“Your home should be the antidote to stress, not the cause of it.” – Peter Walsh
Do you ever look around your home and think: there is stuff everywhere, I’m overwhelmed, or there isn’t enough room?
As a mom of four kids, I’ve experienced seasons of clutter, my own and that of my loved ones who’ve passed. I have also lived in more than 20 homes during my life. I know how it feels to be overwhelmed, stressed, and alone in the mess of it all. And yet, I know I’m not alone.
It’s science; clutter can actually cause you stress.
Research from a 2009 study out of UCLA’s Center on Everyday Lives of Families (CELF) has shown that women who perceive their homes to be cluttered tend to have unhealthy patterns of cortisol levels. A team of professional archaeologists, anthropologists, and other social scientists studied the home life of 32 middle-class, dual-income families with 2-3 children of ages 7-12 in Los Angeles.
According to the CEFL study, the amount of stress women experience at home is directly proportional to the amount of stuff they and their family had accumulated.
Clearing the clutter and learning to let go is essential to living well.
We keep things for many reasons-it’s sentimental, we might need it later, it was a gift, it was expensive. From my experience, you will always find what you’re looking for. If you want a reason to keep something you don’t use or need, that is what you will find. This is why shifting your perspective is essential to letting go.
Let go of your clutter.
